Premiere: Audi Q8 e-tron

Faster charging, greater battery capacity, longer range and a sportier feel.

These are some of the changes when the Audi e-tron is renamed the Q8 e-tron.

Four years have passed since the Audi e-tron was launched. Since then, 150,000 copies have been produced.

The idea was that it could challenge Tesla in the market and in many respects it has been an appreciated car. But a recurring point in a negative sense has been the short range. Another has been that it didn’t feel very sporty.

The Germans have had this in mind when the facelift has been done and the changes, which are presented today, are therefore combined with a name change: the Audi e-tron is now renamed the Q8 e-tron (and the S models go by the name SQ8 e-tron).

Up to 60 miles range

If we start with the range, a relatively large change takes place. Between 30 and 40 percent improvement depending on the model, according to Audi themselves.

The Audi Q8 e-tron 50, which is the simplest model, has a battery of 89 kWh net. This gives a range of 49 miles with the standard body and 50 miles with the Sportback version, according to WLTP.

A slightly larger battery of 106 kWH net is found in the intermediate model Audi Q8 e-tron 55, which should give a range of 58 and 60 miles, respectively.

The top model Audi SQ8 e-tron has the same battery as the mid-range model. However, this will be a 50 mile range due to the higher power output.

Charges 10 to 80% in 31 minutes

These improvements have been made possible by reducing drag from 0.28 to 0.27 Cw for the regular variant and 0.26 to 0.24 in the Sportback version. The electric motor has also become more efficient through an increased number of coils in the motor and the energy density has become higher in the new batteries.

Audi claims that the battery charges from 10 percent to 80 percent in about 31 minutes at maximum charging capacity, which by the way is 170 kW in the more expensive models and 150 kW in the 50 model.

The driving experience itself is also something that is pushed on by the manufacturer. With a recalibrated and stiffer air suspension and a faster steering gear, body control should have improved.

With the option of the matrix LED headlights, it can be projected onto the road where to stay, and a novelty is that when the hazard lights are activated, a warning symbol is projected onto the road to warn other road users.

In terms of design, a new exterior is introduced where the four rings have been given a two-dimensional design and the model designation has been given a new place on the B-pillar.
